Greensomes is a popular pairs golf format played in teams of two, combining strategy, teamwork, and fast-paced competition.
Both players tee off on every hole before the team selects the best drive. From that point, the players alternate shots using the chosen ball until the hole is completed.
For example, if Player A’s drive is selected, Player B will play the next shot, with alternate shots continuing until the ball is holed.
Unlike some foursomes formats, there are no “forced” drives in Greensomes — teams are free to choose either player’s tee shot on every hole, allowing for tactical decision-making throughout the round.
Greensomes rewards strong teamwork, communication, and consistency, making it an enjoyable and competitive format for golfers of all abilities.
Team handicaps are calculated using:
60% of the lower handicap player
40% of the higher handicap player
Player A – Handicap 10
Player B – Handicap 20
(60% of 10) + (40% of 20)
0.6 × 10 = 6
0.4 × 20 = 8
Team Handicap = 14
If Team A receives 14 shots and Team B receives 7 shots, Team A would receive the difference of 7 shots for the match.
Please note: all knockout games have a final handicap limit of 24

Please note: Any decimal value after the handicap calculation is rounded up or down depending on whether it falls below 0.5 or at 0.5 and above.
Please remember to confirm your official Playing Handicap on Scottish Golf before applying any calculations.
The White Tee markers are recommended for competition play. However, if all players agree, any tee box on the course may be used. Please ensure handicaps are recalculated correctly on Scottish Golf for the chosen tee set.
